The Postpartum period
Also known as the “4th trimester” is a time of adjustment, healing, rest, and bonding with your baby. With family often far away and friends with busy lives themselves it can be hard to get the help you really need. This is where the nurturing and non judgmental support of a postpartum doula comes in.
The care I provide is unique to each family I work with, however a typical day can look like this:
We can start the day with an emotional checkin. This can include talking through your birth story, breastfeeding struggles, goals for the day/week, and troubleshooting other concerns on your mind. From there I can start a load of laundry, do some meal prep for the following day and prepare lunch for you and your family. If you’re tired from a night of nursing or bottle feeding baby, I can watch over them while you nap and/or shower. I am there to diminish any other distractions that can get in your way of focusing on bonding with your new babe. Before I leave I make sure your home is tidy and you have everything you need within reach.
As a Postpartum Doula I can offer:
Breast/body feeding or bottle feeding assistance
Newborn care: diapering, bathing, swaddling, baby wearing guidance
Facilitate partner involvement
Meal preparation and postpartum nutrition guidance
Traditional Postpartum Care: belly binding and light lymphatic massage, vaginal steam preparation and guidance, moxabustion, and closing of the bones.
Light housekeeping and laundry
Small errands, such as a grocery or pharmacy pick up
A non judgmental, reassuring presence and an ear to listen
Referrals to specialists: such as lactation consultants, pelvic floor therapists, psychologists, craniosacral therapists, bodywork practitioners and a myriad of other local professionals who specialize in postpartum and newborn care.
Next Steps
interview and consultation- We will meet and get to know each other. During this time we’ll discuss your needs and wishes for support and address any concerns or questions you may have. Partners are strongly encouraged to attend!
Once deciding to work together and the contract is signed- we will meet to discuss what the first days and weeks with your newborn can look like and set up a workable plan for this period. I will share my postpartum essentials resource list and provide any referrals you may need before your baby is here. We will also decide when you foresee wanting my help, for most families this is within the first week after their baby is born.
